Tips For Hiring The Right Lawncare Company

Tips For Hiring The Right Lawncare Company

We want you to find the right lawn care company that will give you the quality service you want and need.  Use the information below to make sure you are making a well-informed decision for an awesome lawn, and your family’s finances, health and safety.

1. What do you need or want?

Are you wanting a quick run-over of your lawn with no special treatment? There isn’t much experience required for this.  Any reputable lawn care company will do. However, if this is what you want it may be better to do it yourself or pay the neighbor’s son to do it.  This will be cheap labor that the neighbor’s son will appreciate.

However, even while you want cheap labor, you may still want your lawn to look decent.  Perhaps the neighbor’s son doesn’t make the cut. In this case, you may want to either do it yourself or, if this isn’t an option, hire a lawn care company.  Just keep in mind that if you are looking for the cheapest option, you usually pay for what you get.

Do you want special care for your lawn? This means not just mowing, edging, weed-eating, and blowing, but weed and pest control, fertilization, sprinkler maintenance and repair, aeration, mulching, etc…  Depending on who you hire, some reputable lawn care companies may offer some but not all of these services or may refer you to a company that does.

Here is a list of what to ask for when hiring a company if you are looking for these options:

  • Fertilizing
  • Bug and/or disease treatment
  • Leave clean-up
  • Hauling leaves
  • Weed pulling or killing
  • Mulching
  • Planting or reseeding
  • Irrigation system maintenance and repair

2. Check the Company’s Reputation

Ask these questions when thinking about hiring a company:

  • How long have they been in business?

Generally, the longer the company has been in business, the more likely that they are a professional, sustainable company.

  • What reputation do they have?

Do they have good reviews on Google, Yelp, BBB, etc…? Have they won awards for excellent service? What professional organizations are they a part of?

  • Are they a local, family-owned business vs. larger chain?

There are pros and cons to both.  A family-owned business often offers more personalized service, whereas large chains may offer more cookie-cutter service.

3. Safety first

Ask these questions to be sure your family, pets, and lawn are safe:

  • Does the company do background checks?

Do they check references? Criminal background? Is the company legal? Do they have policies prohibiting the use of drugs and alcohol by employees?

  • Is the company insured?

What if they break something?  An uninsured company will be cheaper but more risky.

  • Do they carry workman’s comp?

If they do not have workman’s comp, if they are injured on your lawn you could be open to a lawsuit.

  • Are all materials used on your lawn approved by the EPA and safe for your family and pets?

4. What Training Do They Go Through?

In lawn care, it’s not uncommon for employees to not undergo training.  The best companies will have training programs for their new employees to ensure quality and less turnover of employees.

Is they licenced to apply fertilizers and chemicals in a safe manner?  Do the crew leaders have any horticulture degrees to provide the best knowledge and care?  If they damage a sprinkler on your property, do they have a technician who will fix it for free?

5. What is the Best Price?

How do they charge? By time or by cut? Some companies will use the bait-and-switch technique charging low for the first cut but increasing the price dramatically afterwards?  Do customers online seem to be comfortable with their pricing?

What all are you paying for? Look for the rate in your area of companies that do basic maintenance and those that do more extensive care.
