Spring
After long winter nights, it feels so good to finally be able to operate in your lawn without needing five different layers. For most homeowners, springtime is the time to start cleaning your home inside and out. Here’s some lawn maintenance you should do in spring:
Spring Cleanup
First and foremost, rake any leaves that may have survived the snow and cold. Lay down mulch in your flowerbeds which will protect your plants from drought and weeds. Turn your sprinklers on and check for any damage to them. If you hire a lawn care service to take care of your lawn, spring is the time to renew your contract.
Lawns
Reseed your lawn, filling in any bald patches before the summer heat begins. Plant your perennials and any other plants, watering them early and often. When the grass begins to turn bright green, fertilize your lawn.
Summer
While summer doesn’t require the amount of lawn work that spring does, there are still chores that must be done. By taking care of these chores, you’ll have a beautiful lawn for barbecues! Here’s some lawn maintenance you should do in the summer:
Garden
You should be mowing your lawn frequently throughout the summer. Set your mower to the highest setting so you don’t cut the grass too short. You should also be digging up your weeds on a weekly basis! This will help keep your garden looking tidy as the summer goes on.
Water Frequently
As you may expect, watering your foliage is very important when in the summer months. A deep soaking a few times a week goes further than a daily light drizzle. Water your foliage early in the day.
Fall
Fall begins the time that you prepare your lawn for the upcoming winter. If you live in an area that doesn’t experience colder weather, autumn doesn’t have a huge to-do list. However, if you experience colder weather, here are some things to do to your lawn:
Garden
Contrary to popular belief, the fall is a great time to plant perennials like peonies, columbine or hydrangea. It’s also a good time to plant trees and reseed your lawn. You need to be sure to water your new plant’s plenty before they go dormant and they may get first bloom by spring.
Leaves
Our favorite, or should I say least favorite, part of lawn care in the fall, leaves. The second that leaves begin to fall is the second that the raking season officially begins. Leaves can be an eyesore and annoy your neighbors, but it could also lead to mold growth if they smother your lawn.
Winter
Winter is typically too cold and unpredictable to take on any major lawn projects. However, there are some things you can do to ensure the health of your lawn.
Snow Blower
Make sure that your snowblower is in good working order before the snow comes. Ridding your front yard of excessive snow can help make sure your lawn isn’t smothered by snow. You do not want to be caught up in the first snowstorm without your snowblower!
